Retention

The removal of braces signals the start of the retention phase of your orthodontic care. Please remember that the retention phase is just as important as braces in determining the long-term success of your treatment. The benefits of orthodontic treatment will last a lifetime if you keep these important patient responsibilities in mind:

Close to the time that braces will be removed, you will be scheduled for an informal final treatment review, at which time your individual retainers will be discussed. At the time your braces are removed, you will receive both verbal and written instructions for the care of your retainers.

Dental examinations and cleanings-You should continue proper oral hygiene procedures at home, including brushing and flossing techniques. You should plan to be seen by your family dentist at least every six months, for cleanings and evaluations.

Retainers-Once the active orthodontic appliances are removed, you will receive retainers to stabilize the dental correction. Because the bone and soft tissues surrounding the teeth are stabilizing for several months, after the braces are removed, it is imperative that the retainers are worn as instructed. Failure to wear retainers may result in undesirable movement of the teeth. This could result in re-treatment and additional cost may be incurred.

Lifetime Retention-Because teeth can continue to move throughout life, we feel that individuals who have completed orthodontic treatment should wear retainers indefinitely. You should plan on having to wear your retainers every night for two to four years. We recommend that retainers be worn a few nights a week indefinitely.

Supervised Retention-Your initial retainers and eighteen months of supervised retention care are included in the original treatment fee. Because retainers are worn for years, they will need to be replaced periodically. If retainers are lost or damaged due to patient neglect there will be a charge for replacement. If retainers become loose or break, contact our office immediately.

Our goal is to help your smile stay beautiful and healthy for a lifetime. Your cooperation is essential in order to achieve this goal.
